Why You Need a Home Security PlanIf you are like most people your current home security plan probably consists of a smoke detector and a cell phone. The smoke detector will certainly alarm you should the house fill up with smoke -- assuming the smoke alarm even works. However, this is not much of a home security plan. A home security plan isn't just about wiring alarms and getting a few doberman's to guard the house. A security plan includes anything and everything that you plan to do in order to decrease the likelihood of a crime or an accident. Regardless of where you might live, in all likelihood there are several public safety organizations such as your local fire department, police department, and maybe even a few volunteer organizations as well. But, these organizations are responsible for many things -- not just your personal safety. Worse still, these organizations don't even get involved until after something has happened. Budget cuts and staffing problems are common place and seriously impact response time. The bottom line is that our safety organizations are responsible for a bunch of people, a lot of territory, and a lot of incidents. It is not reasonable to expect that they can watch over our families. The over worked conditions of public safety organizations have given rise to additional programs such as block programs, neighborhood watch programs, kid-safe zones, and drug-free zones just to name a few. And, these programs have been widely successful in helping to reduce crime in our neighborhoods. Your home security plan, then, should be partly based on your coordinated efforts with these programs. Only by taking responsibility for your own family's security, will it will be easier for public safety services to help you. A home security plan should focus on prevention and is always better than guns and pepper spray. Installing the best alarm systems will only help minimize the loss if your efforts on prevention fail. Every action in your plan should focus on making your home an undesirable target, make your possessions more difficult for someone to get to, and reduce or eliminate opportunities for home invasion. |
